I’m Leanne and the face behind @billydotmakes. I’m a Melbourne hobby crafter based in the outer east. COVID certainly sent the world into a spin but for me it bought early retirement, a chance to refocus on what’s really important in life and a love (no wait, an addiction!) of creating crochet amigurumi.
I had tried many different crafty pursuits over the past few decades (embroidery, card making, scrapbooking, patchwork, ceramics etc) but I have definitely found my happy place with designing and making amigurumi.
My online name @billydotmakes was something I launched in 2020. It pays homage to my parents who were always so proud of anything I did or made. My mum loved receiving any new item I created and always wanted the first of anything I tried my hand at. My daughter used to call them “billydot” before she mastered grandpa (Billy) and grandma (Dot) as that’s what they called each other. It just seemed a perfect name to use.
I love watching people meet the cuties I create for them when I deliver them but have also been honoured to have people order my cuties from both the US and UK.
At the beginning of 2023 I made the decision to focus solely on bespoke creations. I aim to create individually styled creations that are never repeated. I use quality organic cotton, merino wool and NZ possum yarn mixes as this allows me to provide you with a quality product that has both durability and texture. Going bespoke has really allowed me to develop my design skills and given me both a challenge and huge amount of pleasure along the journey. You will never see exactly the same item more than once on my stall at Evelyn’s Place. Even though I may repeat a design, the colours, accessories and character of the item will never be the same. I’ve also started designing my own amigurumi patterns and will make these designs available for purchase as well. My patterns are available in my Etsy store.
